Nearing the end of the summer trip, Becky, Gamini and I were finishing our mornings work and were on our way back to the hotel. We noticed a cat lying in the road and stopped to see if it was alive or dead. The cat had been dead for a while and had blood all around its face. We quickly noticed the large stone next to the cat and then all the blood spatter on the road.
The cat had obviously been stoned to death. While we wrapped up the cat in a towel we noticed a puppy in the bushes right next to the road, as Becky caught the puppy she saw there was another and grabbed that one also.
At that moment Ishan drove along and he offered to bury the cat. Luckily the pups looked healthy enough to home straight away, and Gamini know of two good families that had been asking for puppies so we set off straight away to home them. We had dropped off the first pup and were on our way to the second house when I noticed something not quite right with a young dog lying by the roadside. I asked Gamini to turn back. The young dog was skin and bones, and had a horrific leg injury, so he to came with us on our journey. We homed the second pup and once again started our journey back to the hotel.
The little skinny dog, who was later named Seth, was first of all cleaned up in the shower. The wound was dirty and he had a distinct smell of sewage about him. Seth was dried off and given a bowl of milk which he readily drank. After this we set to work at cleaning the wound.
Approximately 65+ maggots were removed from the wound; he was given he relevant medication and given a comfy towel to sleep on. By the next day he had perked up and was running around on his three legs. It seems that the leg had been tied (we would never know if it was purposely or not) and the leg had died, maggots had got inside and started eating the leg away and little Seth had possibly gnawed at the leg/missing foot as well. He will now live with Jos and Anura until his wound has healed and he has put on some weight. He is such a sweet and pretty little dog that we are hoping to find a nice home for him when he is better.
