Summer 2007 - trip news
My last day - by Nicky

My last day was a memorable one due to this poor dog who we saw on our way back to Negombo from the Kandy conference. One of us spotted him on the road with a big tumour on his head, like Boris’s. We stopped both minibuses and went to have a closer look. The locals said he was a stray and as we got closer to him we saw that his left eye had been completely eaten away by the cancer, he also had TVT. Janice, Annette and some locals all tried to catch him but he did not want to be caught and kept running away. Most of the locals were trying to help us but one young boy was particularly irritated with us that we there helping the animals and not the people. After about half an hour Annette and Janice managed to catch the dog and it was just in the nick of time a few of the locals had started to get quite nasty. It just reminds us what we are up against in Sri Lanka all the time. Most people are very kind and hospitable but there is a lot of unrest in the country and people have very hard lives and are poor, so we have to do the best we can to help the animals and the people. He was the most beautiful dog but the cancer was too far gone to be treated so we took him back to the clinic, gave him a good feed and he was put to sleep. It was a very sad ending for my two week trip but I was happy that we had managed to catch him and end his suffering.
