December 2007 trip - Day One
Saturday 15th December 2007...

This morning we firstly went to Ralph and Andrea’s place to see the compound/animals and pick up Andrea for work.

Ralph and Andrea's compound

Indiana

Indiana and Amos the monkeys have been pulling the cage apart and we spoke about plans to make the cage bigger and more secure. The original cage that is there now was built very quickly on the day that we rescued Indiana so it is due for updating. We also now have a small cage that the two can be shut in so that Ralph can get in to give the cage a thorough clean and make any repairs and improvements necessary. Amos was neutered on the summer trip and the pair are getting on well. Money was left at the end of the trip to get the project rolling.

Keells

Puppy

Granville

All the dogs looked well, Keells is so happy and had a good run around, Puppy is calm and quiet, but happy and friendly also, Granville has put on weight and looks happy, he likes his kennel and seems to feel safe there as he is blind, he sniffs about in the air and licks your hand.

Jessie

May quietly pottered over to say hello, she looks lovely. Jos 3 Legs is wild!! Sudu has been homed on to make more space. Pheobe’s mange has turned into a lovely coat of fur, but she is one of the most mad dogs I’ve ever known, bounding with energy. All I can say about Benedict is – Wow! He looks fantastic; he is such a gentle sweet boy. Jessie is wild as usual!

Funeral area

After this lovely opportunity to see all our success animals we went on to an area strangely know to us as the ‘funeral area’!! It is an area I have reported about in the newsletter as a new area, we have now been there on approximately 4 trips and things are progressing. We drove our vehicle into the area and set up what could be described as a mobile clinic. People came on foot with their dogs from all over the area and approximately 60 dogs were wormed, given flea treatment, vitamin injections/tablets, collars, leads and shampoo. A list was made of all the dogs needing neuter/spay operations and one lactating bitch was given a bag of Lactol powder to help feed her and her pups.

After dealing with the dogs all the children were lined up and given sweets thanks to Lesley and Michael from Bournemouth. It was a very positive day.

Adelaide

Adelaide

From here we went on to see Jos who looks after Adelaide and Seth who were both rescued on the summer 2007 trip. While we have been in England Jos has also taken in a large number of puppies and kittens, fed them up and made them well and then found good homes for them. A list is kept with all the homes and then also while we are in England they are taken to the clinic to be given Rabies vaccines and to be spayed and neutered. We are pleased that such good work is being done in the name of Home and Abroad Animal Welfare separate from our 3 yearly trips.

Seth

Adelaide looked chubby, calm and settled, and wagged her little stub of a tail. The amputated front leg had healed completely and she was getting around very well. Seth has been struggling with only 3 legs, we had no choice but to amputate his back leg after finding him with half the leg already gone. He has grown quite big, and since he was so malnourished and didn’t have a good start in life the opposite leg to the amputation is carrying the weight and has buckled slightly. He is on medication to help keep his bones strong and Jos will care for him and see how things go. He seems to be happy.

Andrea with Jos's rescued kitten

Jos also had 2 young dogs with mange which she was making better so that she could home them on, a tiny black and white kitten was also picked up off of the roadside that morning by Jos.

Bulla

Bulla

In the evening we went to the clinic, Bulla, Chudi Bulla, Stella and the 2 cats all looked really healthy as usual. The dogs enjoyed a chewy treat, thanks to Ann from Hertfordshire, Bulla got incredibly excited.

From there we went to buy supplies for the next days work and then on to see more of our rescued dogs at Patrick and Rupa’s compound.

Henry was first to greet us – he looked very happy and well. In the compound we have Bert, Bella, Augustus, Carmen and Joyce. They had just eaten their dinner and were chewing some bones for their pudding!! They all looked incredibly well and Bert was especially chubby. We could hear Lucky as we went to see the cows (Daisy, India and Betty). The cows looked stunningly beautiful.
