December 2007 trip - Day Two
Sunday 16th December 2007...

This Morning our first port of call was at a ladies house who lives on the beach front. She takes in and cares for many stray animals. We wormed 8 of her dogs and 3 puppies; she also had 2 cats and 3 kittens.

After this we went to an area that we call ‘Hyde Park Corner’, when we got there we split into 2 groups, one group waited for all the local dogs to be brought by their owners for treatment (approximately 30 dogs were seen in all) and the other group travelled around to check on some of our long term dependants.

My Fair lady who looks after 2 of our rescued cows (Hope and Clarity) also has 8 dogs and 3 puppies living on her property. All were wormed and some lined up for spay and neuter operations.

Then onto Freeway’s road where 8 dogs were treated and given supplies. Jake’s family had taken in another 3 young dogs; all four were wormed and given supplies. Chelsea, Batty and Amber were all checked on.

From Hyde Park Corner we travelled to ‘Pretty Girl’s’ area. Pretty Girl looks after one of our cows Parsley and many dogs. 10 dogs from the area were given treatment. Sadly we heard news that ‘Smiley Dog’ who has been around for many years had sadly died. Another sad case was a neighbour’s dog had been badly neglected. Pretty Girl had done her best to look after the dog and had bought treatment from a vet. It was agreed that we would take the dog to one of our compounds, it seems that it was too late for the poor dog and he died in the night.

The last call of the morning (now late afternoon) was to 2 houses nearby where 2 very kind families live. Between the families they look after approximately 15 street dogs. All were wormed and given flea treatment and vitamin injections, one Mama dog with pups was given a tin of Lactol to keep them all in good health. Some were lined up for spay/neuter operations. One of the dogs in their care was an old dog with quite bad mange and a lot of ticks. The family was shown how to remove the ticks which they then did themselves. Special mange treatment shampoo was left, and we vowed to return before the trip would end. Soon after arriving at the houses one lady brought out a small pup which had been kept in her kennel. The young dog was in a very bad way, severely malnourished and suffering from mange. Worst of all lady said that she had found the dog 3 days before knocked down on the road and she had taken it home. The dog had a leg wound and we syringed some liquid into the dog’s mouth as he was lifeless. Unsure whether the dog was just sick or in shock or quite possibly both we took him to the clinic then into our care overnight where sadly he died.
