Monday 17th December 2007...
Today we went to ‘Little Janice’s’ area. It is called this because of a young girl who lives in the area called Nellum. Nellum talks and talks and tried to organise everyone in the area. We treated approximately 40 – 50 dogs in this area. Along with general treatment one dog was taken to the clinic possibly suffering from distemper, another 2 were taken for mange treatment. More than ten dogs were lined up for blood tests and spay and neuter operations (which were carried out over the next few days).

Maggots eating him alive
A lady asked us to go to her house and look at her dog that had been knocked down on the road a few days before. The lady had taken him to a government vet and had been giving him some treatment. She said that she had been up late with the dog every night trying to look after him as best she could, cleaning him and get him to eat and drink, which he had stopped doing the last couple of days. The dog was obviously in a lot of pain and growled and snapped at us, so we had to muzzle him. We checked him over and found that he had no use of his front legs; they were stiff and seemed to have no feeling. We offered food and drink which he had no interest in, so we syringed some liquid into his mouth. The lady confirmed that he had no control over his toileting since the accident and we cleaned up his body and moved him onto a clean towel. We found 3 maggot holes, in his leg, testicles and penis, some of the penis had been eaten away. The lady had already removed a lot of the maggots and we continued with this task. After spending about an hour discussing the dog’s situation we asked the lady how she would feel about taking the dog to our clinic, we felt that it would be kinder to put him to sleep and the lady agreed that would be kindest thing and to go and get a second opinion from our vet Rohan. The dog was put to sleep at the clinic and the lady was upset but thanked us for our help and said that it was for the best, we gave her some money to buy herself some chocolates, which obviously wouldn’t make the situation better but chocolate always helps me on a bad day.

We also checked on Gamini’s dogs today, and Janice got more than she bargained for when she nearly walked into a bee’s nest!!
Dominic, Blackie and Jimmy all looked great and as usual Buddy was off doing his own thing!
